Question:

I want to attach a standard ASME B16.5/B16.47 blind flange to a studding outlet (COMPRESS Type 11 or Type 12 nozzle) but the button to attach flanges to the nozzle is disabled. Why?

Answer:

COMPRESS provides a database of "standard" studding outlets as defined in the Forged Vessel Connections ("FVC") Inc. catalog (and available from other manufacturers as well). The vessel designer can select the "pressure class" designation of the studding outlet to be used.

However, ASME B16.5 and B16.47 do not define studding outlets as a standard type of flange. A stress analysis for this type of construction would be very different than that for any of the flange types defined in ASME B16.5/B16.47, or even in ASME Section VIII Division 1, Appendix 2 flange analysis.

FVC and other manufacturers list standard sizes of studding outlets in their catalogs and indicate these by the ASME B16.5/B16.47 pressure class designation. This is to indicate that the flange dimensions, facing, bolting, etc, matches those for standard flanges as defined in ASME B16.5 and B16.47. But the studding outlet itself is not "rated" to the pressure-temperature ratings of the flange standards.

A current limitation of COMPRESS is that it does not allow standard blind flanges to be attached to the studding outlet. This may be relieved in a future version of COMPRESS. To compensate for the missing weight of the blind flange, a vertical load can be added to the vessel model at the location of the studding outlet.
