Uno de los principales problemas de cumplimiento encontrados en muchas instalaciones antiguas es la falta de documentación de los recipientes a presión. La falta de placas de características, cálculos de diseño, planos e informes de inspección hace imposible determinar los programas de inspección y demostrar el cumplimiento de la norma PSM. Específicamente, el Código de Inspección de Recipientes a Presión requiere que los propietarios de los recipientes a presión mantengan registros permanentes y progresivos como se indica en la sección 7.8 de la norma API 510.
